Holiday Gift Idea: Books for the Dad in Your Life from DK Books
Why is it that dads are always so hard to shop for? It doesn’t matter if I’m shopping for my own dad, my husband, my brother in law, or my father in law, I’m always stumped! Of course there’s the fall back option of socks, underwear, undershirts, and/or a tie, but surely the dads out there want a little something more exciting under the tree each year. Don’t get me wrong here… Dads absolutely need socks, underwear, undershirts, and/or a tie. If other dads are anything like my husband, they’re blowing through socks like it’s some kind of competition. By the time Christmas rolls around each year, it’s high time for some new socks. I do try to put a fair amount of thought into the gifts I choose for everyone each year, and this year I’ve come up with the perfect plan (and there’s no socks involved). Books! Books are one of my favourite things to gift! I love seeing a face light up because the book is something that person is really going to enjoy! DK Books always has great selection and I’ve found three books that I’m sure King Dad will love! Maybe they’ll be the perfect books for the dad in your life too!
Is one of the dads you’re shopping for really into movies? The Movie Book is a must have! Unlike other books about movies that essentially review different films, The Movie Book is filled with movies that hold an important place in the history of film rather than one person’s opinions on “the best” movies of all time. Each film is presented with a brief context that includes the genre, director, writers, stars, and the relevant films that came immediately before and after that film. The book even recommends other films that would be worth watching if the one that made it into the book is one you’ve enjoyed. From Citizen Kane to The Shawshank Redemption, and even some foreign films thrown in, there’s sure to be something new for any film buff to discover in this one! This book is the perfect accompaniment to dad’s favourite movie series (The Godfather perhaps?)!
I’ll admit that I do the majority of the cooking in our house, but that doesn’t mean King Dad doesn’t have a keen interest in cooking. In fact, he’s always finding new cookie recipes to try with the kids and sending me new recipes to add to the list for our family dinners. The Science of Cooking is such an awesome book for him. It’s all about answering the how and the why of cooking techniques and food preparation processes. From covering the materials that knives and cookware are made with (and why it matters) to breaking down every cut of meat to the science of baking, this book answers all the questions you might have about perfecting your favourite recipe. I’ve always been curious about sous vide cooking and this books covers that really well! In fact, this book would be the perfect accompaniment to a sous vide machine for an adventurous home cook!
The book that I know King Dad is going to enjoy the most is Whiskey: The Definitive World Guide. Sure he has his favourite Scotch Whiskeys, but he also really enjoys finding new whiskeys to try that either have the flavour profile he knows and loves or are something completely new and different. There’s been a book about whiskey under the tree or in King Dad’s stocking for the last three years in a row, and he always enjoys them! Whiskey: The Definitive World Guide was just updated in October of this year, so he’s sure to find some new distilleries in this one. Aside from knowing that King Dad prefers Scottish whiskey from Islay, I don’t really know a whole lot about whiskey. This book is a great reference for me too as I can flip to the distilleries I know he loves (Lagavulin, Laphroaig, and Bowmore), and find other whiskeys that would have a similar flavour profile. Every region from Scotland to Japan is covered in this book, and it includes descriptions and tasting notes for more whiskeys than I even knew were available! I love that Shelter Point distillery on Vancouver Island in BC (Canada) is mentioned! We’re planning on visiting that distillery over our Christmas holidays! I know that my dad and King Dad have bonded over many a glass of scotch whiskey, so this book would be a great pick for both of them! Wrap up a bottle of your whiskey lover’s favourite spirit to go along with this book, and that’s one dad you can scratch off the gift buying list!
