Splash In The Sun with Bummis

Since having Petit Prince I’ve learned a few things about parenting. There are just so many things that I did with The Heir that I have not done with Petit Prince. You know the old adage that no two babies are alike? Well, it’s so very true. You know what I didn’t have with The Heir? Child friendly dishes. I’m not even kidding. Okay, that’s not 100% true, I think I had two plastic bowls. That was it. The Heir ate off our regular porcelain plates and drank from ceramic cups and mugs for the vast majority of his meals from the time we introduced solids until, well now. Somehow he made it through all this without ever breaking a plate or cup. So naturally, I figured I’d do the same thing for Petit Prince. There was only one small problem. Petit Prince was not like his brother and had no qualms about swiping plates and cups right off the table without a moment’s notice. I used to have a complete set of eight side plates and eight saucers. I now have just four of each. Those that remain are covered in chips along the edges. This is where Re-Play Recycled comes in. Re-Play has changed my opinion of child friendly dishes, and saved the few remaining pieces in my set of grown up dishes!

Re-Play is a line of infant and toddler tableware developed by Re-Think It, a family owned and family-focused company based out of the USA. Aside from being pretty well indestructible, Re-Play tableware is made out of recycled HDPE plastic. In other words, they’re made out of recycled milk jugs! Re-Play tableware is BPA-free, phthalate free, PVC free, BPS free, lead free, and contains no melamine. Re-Play dishes are also dishwasher safe. One of the cool things about Re-Play is that they come in a vast array of colours. If you or your little one have a favourite colour, you’re sure to find some Re-Play you’ll love. Or you can get creative and make your own rainbows and fun colour combinations.

I’ve been using Re-Play dishes for Petit Prince and The Heir for a while now, and I am loving it. I never hear the dreaded crash of a porcelain plate on the floor when I turn my back to the table, but there’s so much more to it than just that. As with many things in my family’s life, I try to make eco-responsible choices whenever I can. One of the things that led me to stick with using our regular porcelain dishes for the kids for so long was that it wasn’t just filling up landfills with more plastic. With Re-Play being made of recycled milk jugs, I feel pretty great about choosing it for my family.

How about the functionality of Re-Play dishes? They’re excellent. The flat plate and divided plate both have nice high sides with curved edges inside. That means food easily scoops up even when it’s made its way to the very inner edge of the plate. Plus, since it’s nice and deep, there’s way less food sliding off these plates. That means there’s less post meal time clean up for me! The divided plate is great for keeping foods separate. If you have a little one that doesn’t like their foods to touch, this plate does the trick. I find that it works great for keeping dry and wet foods separate so the dry items don’t get soggy (like garlic toast and spaghetti). Re-Play bowls are the perfect size for the kids. When I first received them, I thought they were a little small, but they have been great for both kids. They fill with just the right amount of cereal, and make a great dish for an afternoon snack. I went with the open drinking cups for both The Heir and Petit Prince. The Heir’s been doing to open cup thing for years, but Petit Prince is really just getting the hang of it. These cups are easy for him to grip and they aren’t slippery in his hands. They’re fairly tall, so I never actually fill them more than half full for either of the kids. I’d rather have more space than I need in a cup so it’s never full to the brim; I just find that there are fewer spills that way. How about those utensils? I love them. The spoon is so great. It’s the perfect size for Petit Prince and it’s deep enough that runny things like soup don’t just dribble away before he gets the spoon to his mouth. The handle is nice and wide so it’s easy for him to keep his grip on it. I’ve heard from some parents that the fork isn’t great, but honestly, it works well for us. The prongs of the fork aren’t particularly sharp, but this doesn’t seem to be a problem for Petit Prince. Maybe he’s just a strong food stabber? Regardless, I do actually like the Re-Play fork.

Let’s talk about how these wear over time. My first concern was that Re-Play dishes would be prone to staining. Have you ever had a reusable container get stained by tomato sauce in the dishwasher? This happens here all the time. Half my (knock off) tupperware is stained sort of orange. Naturally, I put a fair number of spaghetti dinners in our Re-Play dishes and put them right into the dishwasher without rinsing them first. They’ve come out with absolutely no staining. Even the yellow comes out pristine! I’m really impressed with how these dishes resist staining. With day to day use, I do expect there to be some wear. The main source of wear on our Re-Play is from cutting food before serving it to the kids. There’s some scratching on the plates from cutting with a knife, but it’s nothing crazy. I expected this type of wear, so it doesn’t bother me in the least. Re-Play dishes are really brightly coloured, and these colours stay bright. I haven’t noticed any fading at all despite our Re-Play dishes being used multiple times a day.

The cost of Re-Play is really affordable and totally worth the small investment. Flat or divided plates cost $4.95 CAD each, bowls and open cups are $2.95 CAD each, and utensil sets are just $2.50 CAD each. For how well these wear and how long they’ll last, I think the cost is well worth it.

Overall, I’m really happy with our Re-Play dishes. I honestly can’t believe it’s taken me this long to get into Re-Play. Why on earth was I using our regular dishes for The Heir? Re-Play would have been so much better! It’s such a simple thing, but Re-Play dishes are such a great product that we use every single day. I’m all over recycling as much as possible, so I really appreciate that Re-Play tableware is made from recycled milk jugs. As an added bonus, when we’re done with our Re-Play, it can be recycled again! The bright colours are so much fun for the kids, and these colours last and last. With no fading and no staining, these dishes should be looking great for years to come.
