Eco-Friendly Disposables? Meet Andy Pandy Premium Bamboo Disposable Diapers

As a cloth diapering family, we try our best to make eco-friendly choices whenever we can. I use reusable menstrual products for myself, Petit Prince is in cloth diaper, we use cloth wipes for more than just wiping bums, and we recently started composting (thank you City of Calgary for introducing a city-wide composting program). Although I don’t find cloth diapering to be inconvenient in the least, sometimes it’s nice to take a little break from cloth. Cloth diapering doesn’t have to be all or nothing. Some families use cloth diapers only at home, others use cloth diapers only for day time, and others prefer not to travel with cloth diapers when they take a family vacation. Our family recently took a summer vacation to the West Coast (Vancouver and Vancouver Island), and though we were staying with family who have laundry machines we decided not to pack Petit Prince’s cloth diapers. Why? There were a few reasons. First, I was flying out with the two kids on my own and wanted to minimize how many suitcases I needed to bring. Second, sometimes it’s nice not the have to do laundry on vacation. I opted to bring disposable diapers instead, and I don’t regret it at all. My eco-friendly lifestyle wasn’t thrown out the window for this vacation though. I opted to take eco-friendly, biodegradable disposable diapers for Petit Prince. Yup, that’s a thing! What are these disposable diapers I speak of? They are Andy Pandy Premium Bamboo Disposable Diapers! Here’s what you need to know about them. 

Before I get into the details of these diapers, I want to take a moment to introduce you to the folks behind these diapers. As I’m sure you know by now, I love to support small family run businesses, and it was possible to do that when it came to high quality eco-friendly disposable diapers. Andy Pandy Premium Bamboo Disposable Diapers are made by Hansen Kids, LLC. Hansen Kids is a small owner-operated family business in Michigan founded by Steve and Jessican Hansen. Their goal was to create a brand that was safe for children (including their four little ones), and safe for the environment. Their purpose is to “build a brand that parents can trust 100% every time they use it on their babies without worrying about harmful chemicals”.

How can a disposable diaper be eco-friendly? It’s all in the ingredients and materials used. Andy Pandy Premium Bamboo diapers are made with 100% non-woven bamboo fiber for the top sheet and back sheet of the diaper. These are the parts of the diaper that are in direct contact with baby’s skin. The bamboo is really strong and very absorbent, but it’s still soft to the touch. Inside the diaper you’ll find a combination of totally chlorine free fluff pulp, SAP, and pure aloe essence to provide nourishment to baby’s skin. There’s elastic at the waist and around the legs, a velcro tape closure, and a PH strip wetness indicator. What exactly is SAP? SAP stands for super absorbent polymers. These work like little sponges to absorb moisture. Andy Pandy diapers have minimal amounts of SAP added. SAP is non-toxic and the MBDC evaluated SAP as “green”. According to the MBDC, that’s the “safest assessment as far as chemicals are concerned”.

Andy Pandy Premium Bamboo disposable diapers are also mostly biodegradable. With bamboo as the main material, these diapers are 86.5% biodegradable. While the vast majority of the components of the Andy Pandy diaper is biodegrable, there are some parts that are not. The non-biodegradable parts are the diaper tabs, elastic, and SAP. However, you may be able to put your Andy Pandy diapers in the compost depending on the rules of the composting program where you live. Here in Calgary, diapers cannot be composted, but in Toronto disposable diapers CAN be composted.

Just as important as what goes into disposable diapers, is what’s not in them. Andy Pandy Premium Bamboo diapers are free of the following ingredients:

• no perfumes or lotions
• no alcohol or preservatives
• no latex, pvc, tbt, or antioxidants
• free of phthalates
• 100% chlorine free

Do Andy Pandy Premium Disposable Diapers work?

I have to admit that I’m probably among the least experienced parents out there when it comes to disposable diapers. We used them briefly in the first week or two after both The Heir and Petit Prince were born and used them for about ten days in Italy with The Heir back in 2013. Other than that, I have very limited experience with them. Despite that, I’m going to tell you what our experience with these diapers was for Petit Prince. Petit Prince is just over two years old (25 months) and weighs 24 lbs 4 oz. Andy Pandy diapers are sized by weight, and Petit Prince falls into the large size which fits from 20-31 lbs. He is a pretty long and lean toddler, so although he probably could have fit in the medium size Andy Pandy diapers, the large fit him fine with lots of room to grow. In case you didn’t know, disposable diapers go on differently than cloth diapers. Despite this, I had no issues getting these diapers on Petit Prince properly. I thought the fit was pretty good, though I did notice Petit Prince had a little less fluff on his bum than I’m used to with cloth.

These diapers were plenty absorbent for Petit Prince. I would class him as a moderate wetter during the day, and a moderate to heavy wetter overnight depending on how thirsty he was that day. When we first went to put an Andy Pandy Premium Bamboo diaper on Petit Prince for bedtime, King Dad said “umm, is this going to last all night?”. Being used to a bulky overnight diaper, he was skeptical that a trim disposable would be able to do the trick. Good news! These diapers absolutely did the trick. They are really absorbent! For daytime use and overnight use, they were enough for Petit Prince. In fact, we had no leaks the whole time we were on vacation and using Andy Pandy diapers.

What I liked about these diapers is that they are 100% chlorine free. One of the main reason we choose cloth diapers for our kids is to avoid them spending their whole day and night with harmful chemicals against their private parts. With Andy Pandy diapers being chlorine and phthalate free, I feel much more comfortable with using disposable diapers. The wetness indicator line is a great feature. These diapers don’t swell up a whole lot when wet, so it would be hard to tell when they’re wet without that indicator line. It’s really handy. Andy Pandy diapers do not stink. Now maybe this is just a thing that cloth diapering parents notice, but disposable diapers are usually really smelly. The fragrance in them is so strong, and it only gets worse when they’re peed in or soiled. Andy Pandy diapers have zero fragrance and absolutely no smell. Even when they’re wet, they don’t stink. If the diaper is pooped in, I drop the solid waste in the toilet before rolling up the diaper and putting it in the garbage. Doing this means I don’t smell anything when these Andy Pandy diapers are in an open waste bin. I loved that! Andy Pandy Premium Bamboo disposable diapers are really breathable too. I was a little worried that Petit Prince would develop a rash as he has in other disposable diapers, but this was a non issue with the Andy Pandy diapers. They’re great for littles with sensitive skin.
