Five Reasons a Baby Monitor is Essential for Toddlers

I received compensation for this post. All opinions are my own.

It’s probably pretty obvious that a baby monitor is an important item you’re going to want to have when you welcome your bundle of joy into the family. The peace of mind a baby monitor offers while your little one is sleeping is priceless. But what about when your baby becomes a toddler? Does toddlerhood mean it’s time to ditch the baby monitor? Absolutely not! In fact, I would argue that a baby monitor becomes even more important as your little one moves into toddlerhood! A baby monitor for toddlers? How can that be? Oh so many reasons. Here are my five reasons to keep using a baby monitor well into toddlerhood.

1. Toddlers don’t necessarily sleep any more/better than babies.

If you’re patiently waiting for baby to get through the latest sleep regression and slip seamlessly into the magical territory of sleeping from 7pm to 7am once they’re one year old, you’re in for a surprise. Yes, some toddlers are wonderful sleepers, but many toddlers are not. Petit Prince is one of the many toddlers who aren’t sleeping through the night at 18 months old. In fact, he’s up once and sometimes twice each night. Being able to see and hear him when he wakes up is helping me maximize my sleep time. I use the ECO mode of the Philips Avent Digital Video Baby Monitor when I go to bed. That means the screen only turns on when Petit Prince makes some noise so I don’t have to worry that the bright screen will keep me awake. When he starts to stir, I can see what he’s doing so I know if he’s just shifting position or if he actually needs me to come in and help him fall back to sleep.

2. Toddlers like to climb.

The Heir wasn’t much of the climbing type, but Petit Prince is a total climber. Despite his crib mattress being as low as it can go, I’m convinced that one of these days he’s going to get himself up and out of it on his own. Enter the Philips Avent Digital Video Baby Monitor. He may be quiet as a mouse, but I can see the mischief he’s up to when he’s being all too quiet. If it looks like he’s making a break for it, I can get to his room before he tumbles to the floor.

3. Sleeping toddlers are adorable and also creepy.

We didn’t have a video monitor with The Heir, but a lot of our friends with babies the same age had them. I remember them sharing the sweetest photos of their toddlers sleeping, and was a little envious that I had no way to see what The Heir did in his sleep. Well, I suppose I could have attempted to sneak into his room to watch him, but we all know how easy it is to sneak into the room of a sleeping toddler without waking him up. With the Philips Avent Digital Video Baby Monitor, I don’t miss any of the sweet things Petit Prince does in his sleep. The 3.5″ high-res colour screen gives me a great picture, and I can even use the 2x digital zoom to get even closer! I love seeing the way he always shimmies himself right up to the top of the crib and how he still likes to sleep with his bum up in the air sometimes. It’s totally adorbs. Sometimes Petit Prince does some downright creepy things in his sleep, and I get to see those moments too! Just last night he was sound asleep and then all of a sudden was sitting straight up in the middle of his crib. It was a little Paranormal Activity-esque, but he quickly flopped right back down to sleep. I’m not even sure he was awake when he sat up… Creepy.

4. Some toddlers think stripping down in their crib is fun.

Yup, I’m going there. Petit Prince has not reached this point yet, but judging from the way he likes to grip onto the tabs of his diaper when he can get his hands on it, I think it’s coming. There are toddlers out there who like to remove their clothing and their diaper while they’re hanging out in the crib. Guess what happens if your toddler manages to remove their diaper in the crib without your knowledge… Wouldn’t that be a messy surprise? Indeed. With the Philips Avent Digital Video Baby Monitor set up, you can see it happening before it gets out of hand. I’ve also heard that putting sleepers on backwards can prevent your toddler from getting their hands on or into their diaper.

5. No one can be in two rooms at once!

Once Petit Prince is through the latest sleep regression (can I call it a sleep regression if it’s lasted more than a year?), I plan to move the Philips Avent Digital Baby Monitor into the playroom. I love that Petit Prince is reaching that age where he likes to play independently with his older brother. The two of them seem to thoroughly enjoy each other’s company and The Heir likes showing Petit Prince how to use his toys. However, sometimes the wrestling gets a little out of hand or Petit Prince starts climbing on things he shouldn’t (did I mention that he’s a climber?). I’d love to always be able to be in the same room with my kids, but the reality is that sometimes I have to get things done around the house! Having the monitor set up in the baby-proofed playroom while I’m cooking dinner keeps the little guys out of the kitchen and allows me to still keep a close eye on what’s going on. The parent unit of the monitor can be plugged in, but it also runs on batteries so I can have it with me no matter where I am in the house. Best of all, the Philips Avent Digital Video Baby Monitor lets me talk to the boys through the monitor. That’s right. No more yelling up the stairs or running up and down constantly. If it looks like they’re getting too rough, I can tell them to take it down a notch through the monitor! Brilliant.

Of course the Philips Avent Digital Video Baby Monitor is great for keeping an eye on your newborn too! This monitor won the PTPA (Parent Tested Parent Approved) Seal of Approval, so you know it’s full of features parents love. The built in nightlight is perfect for late night feeding sessions, and the soothing lullabies allow you to play a little music for baby at bedtime. There’s a temperature sensor in the monitor as well, so you know exactly how warm or cool it is in baby’s room and can dress them for bed accordingly. The parent unit lasts for up to 10 hours before you need to plug it back in, so you don’t need to be moving the plug-in all over the house as you go about your day. It has a great range at 150 ft, so you can be virtually anywhere in the house and still keep an eye on your little one. Something I LOVE about the Philips Avent Digital Video Baby Monitor is that it runs interference free! I can’t tell you how many monitors I’ve tried that have “white noise” or a fuzzy static sound whenever they were on. The Philips Avent Digital Video Monitor is totally silent, private, and secure! Love that!

  1. I originally wasn’t going to get a baby monitor…our daughter is 6 months old and we’ve gotten along fine without one; however, after reading this post, I’m starting to reconsider. LOL.

  2. We survived without a video monitor for mr G but definitely am considering one now for miss M. Love the idea of putting it in the play room to allow for supervised independent play!!

  3. I didn’t have a monitor for my first lo because we lived in a small space but I will need one for sure for my second one due this month!

  4. I don’t have a baby monitor yet. When I move my baby to her room, I will definitely want one to be sure that she’s okay as her room is in the opposite of the house. Thanks for your blog…you provide great reasons to continue using baby monitor into toddler times which I didn’t think about before. It’ll be great if I can win the monitor!!! thanks for the giveaway opportunity!

  5. We still have a video monitor in our four year old’s room because it’s on a different level than ours, and I don’t want to go all the way to her room in the middle of the night just to find out she’s only mumbling in her sleep! We have another camera for the two year old who doesn’t sleep through the night yet too.

  6. We used baby monitors right from birth. I like to keep an eye on my baby while she sleeps (see whether or not she’s sleeping on her back, etc.). It’s definitely a must-have!

  7. No I don’t have a monitor but I wish I would have bought one for my now 10 month old

  8. I had no baby monitor for my children but we had them for the grandchildren.

  9. We have used the angel care motion sensor but as my little one is getting bigger and starting to climb I’d like to see what he’s doing in the crib so we are looking at getting a video one as well!

  10. A video monitor is my most recommended baby item! As a nervous new parent it’s so nice to see if baby is just stirring or actually waking. Nothing ruins a nap or nighttime sleep like barging in to a room where baby wasn’t awake!

  11. I never had a video monitor but I wish I had! When my daughter was 3 and “napping” she made some pretty huge messes, and I never even heard through our audio monitor!

  12. I honestly have never been a fan of baby monitors. I have always slept with my kids. And I have a modest home with only one level (minus the basement which is nasty and used only for storage and the laundry room). I have honestly never felt the need or desire for a monitor. Plus the whole hackability factor creeps me out. But you do you, of course!

  13. While our babies are always close to me, they move in with siblings during the toddler years and YES, I think it is great to have a video monitor for a second pair of eyes. It covers everything from sickness to destruction to “who in heck is that singing at 3 am??”

  14. Yes! I bought monitors when my newborn came along so I could watch my toddlers in other areas of the house when I was nursing. Great because they’re adventurous and I could talk back through the monitor to them!

  15. I really want something like this for my daughter who just turned 3 because she has had a couple seizures in her sleep. Her seizures cause her to stop breathing and require immediate medical care. I now have my 3 year old and 7 month old in my room with me and it’s crowded. A reliable video monitor and maybe some sort of movement alarm would be really beneficial for better sleep!

  16. I have never had one for my babies but I love all the awesome features
and the importance of having one.I would love to win one for my niece who is due in February. 🙂

  17. Had no video when my oldest was a baby.. would love this for my newest niece!

  18. I never used one with my other two but i would love to try one with my 6 month old.

  19. We didn’t think a video monitor would be necessary but when we started to sleep train by gosh we wished we had one. And when the weather got nicer and we were having bon fires outside a video monitor would have been nice then too. Summers and sleep training are coming up with Mr. T so we are looking for one!

  20. Video monitoring is great. It’s never too early to introduce kids to the real world of video.

  21. I will soon be taking care of my grandson and this would be just perfect to know that I can hear him anywhere in our home.

  22. I didn’t have a monitor and actually have never used one, but I always thought it would be a good idea to use one.

  23. My daughter lives in a medical fragile group home and their are some clients who could use this type of device. I wish it was available when my daughter was young.

  24. My husband and I are researching baby monitors for our first little one. It would be great to win one so we can cross that item off the baby gear list!

  25. We had a great monitor which was not an expensive, fancy one. But it was perfect for listening for our two sets of twins, as their bedroom wasn’t on the same floor as ours. Only issue is that we could hear our neighbours when we changed channels!

  26. It is a pretty good!! I am looking into buying baby monitor your article and discussion will help me a lot. I will purchase it from Baby Direct shop. Thanks for Sharing

  27. Wow, I had never thought about the importance of using a baby monitor with a toddler until now. I’ve seen videos that found their toddlers had dismantled a bean bag chair or dumped talc everywhere while in their rooms. Keeping a monitor close by would help prevent that type of chaos!

  28. I like the sleeper on backward….. have to remember to tell my niece 🙂

Have told my niece I would get her monitor but right now she says no, they co sleep

  29. I see the importance of these BABY Monitors, and this is why I will purchase one when I am ready to start a family.

  30. A good list of reasons why a baby monitor is needed past the baby stage. I especially like the idea of having it in their play area to keep an eye on what they are doing when you’re not in the room. This would be helpful even past the toddler stage. You might have to make it hidden somehow at some point though.

  31. This monitor is great. The only way I’d love it more is if both the parent and camera units were able to be cord free, then I could use it camping, etc. It’s in the kids playroom right now and I can get something done around the house without having to make a detour past the playroom every 2 minutes. The communication between them is clear, the video is clear, no interference with my other baby monitor. So good.

  32. Monitors are so essential for peace of mind. I don’t know how parents did without them before.
