GroVia ONE Cloth Diaper Review

I received this item at no cost to facilitate my review. All opinions are my own. This post contains affiliate links.

It’s pretty rare in the cloth diapering world for a diaper to be functional as an overnight diaper without requiring any additional boosters. I could probably count the number of diapers I’ve tried that function well as an overnight diaper without any extras on just one hand, and I’ve tried A LOT of cloth diapers in my day. It’s not that there’s anything wrong with diapers that can’t stand up to overnight use without a booster, in fact, I’d argue that it’s expected that the vast majority of cloth diapers need a boost at night. Yet I’d been hearing rumours about one diaper in particular that could stand up to overnight use just as it comes. Okay, maybe not rumours so much as fans shouting it from the roof tops. What is this mythical diaper I speak of? Why it’s the GroVia O.N.E.! I’ve heard it time and time again, cloth diapering moms are always recommending the GroVia O.N.E. for overnight use. I wanted to see for myself what all the hype was about, so when Miranda of Calgary Cloth Diaper Depot gave me a GroVia O.N.E. to review I was thrilled! Calgary Cloth Diaper Depot is my favourite local retailer, and they’ve recently introduced FREE SHIPPING to the US & Canada with no minimum purchase. How amazing is that? (GroVia products can only be shipped within Canada). Want to know if the GroVia O.N.E. lived up to all the hype? Here’s what I think about it.

The Details:

GroVia ONE Cloth Diaper Review

Meet the GroVia O.N.E. cloth diaper. This diaper was designed to be one diaper for all families. The idea is that it will function as a diaper that will meet the needs of everyone that wants to cloth diaper. Can’t decide between snaps or hook & loop closure? With O.N.E., you don’t have to. Not sure how to succeed with cloth diapering overnight? With O.N.E., you get everything you need to diaper during the day and overnight. Worried that your partner, the grandparents, or child care provider won’t like using a snap closure? With O.N.E., you don’t have to compromise to have an easy to use closure. Need a diaper that will fit through potty training? The O.N.E. does that too. In theory, the GroVia O.N.E. diaper takes all the guess work out of choosing a cloth diapering system. Here’s what you get in the O.N.E.

GroVia ONE Cloth Diaper Review

The GroVia O.N.E. diaper is considered an all in one cloth diaper, although it actually functions more like an all in two diaper. Typically, with an all in one cloth diaper you would expect to have the absorbent materials sewn into the waterproof shell. The O.N.E., although it includes all the soakers you need, those soakers snap into the waterproof shell. It’s certainly an “all in one” diaper in the sense that it provides the user with all the choices in one diaper, it’s more of an “all in two” diaper in its function.

The Grovia O.N.E. has a polyester thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) waterproof outer shell. The inner lining of the shell consists of a microfleece inner with a snap at the back to snap in the soakers. There’s a strip of TPU inside the front of the diaper to help prevent wicking up the front. Hidden inside the shell between the TPU and the microfleece is a layer of polyester microfibre. What that means is that the shell itself has built in absorbency. In a way, the shell functions as a booster in and of itself.

The GroVia O.N.E. diaper fits babies from 10 to 35lbs. It accommodates that range of sizing with a 3×3 snap rise adjustment. The smallest rise fits small infants from approximately 10 to 14 lbs, the medium rise fits older infants from approximately 14 – 22lbs, and the largest rise fits toddlers from approximately 22 to 35lbs.

GroVia ONE Cloth Diaper Review

The GroVia O.N.E. has a special “outlast closure”. What that means is that you can choose between a hook & loop closure or a snap closure. When the hook & loop closure wears out, a replacement can be purchased for a minimal cost. As a snap closure, the tabs of the O.N.E. each have two male snaps to secure the diaper to the single row of snaps along the front of the diaper. The left tab has a third female snap that allows you to cross the tabs over (right over left) to fit smaller babies. To use the hook & loop closure, you snap the hook & loop strips onto the snaps along the front of the diaper and the snaps on the diaper tabs. The right tab has a piece of hook & loop (the soft loop part) sewn onto it to allow you to cross the tabs over (left over right) to fit smaller babies. As there are no laundry tabs for the hook & loop on the GroVia O.N.E. diaper, GroVia recommends that you remove the hook & loop strips before washing.

The GroVia O.N.E. diaper comes with two absorbent soakers, a small and a large. The small soaker pad is made of 100% cotton topped with microfleece. It is recommended for use on its own for small infants when the shell is set to the smallest rise. There’s one snap on the small soaker so it can be snapped into the shell. The large soaker pad is made of 100% cotton topped with microfleece, and is stitched along its length to create channels. This channeling helps to direct liquid to the centre of the diaper where it can be quickly absorbed into the core. The large soaker is recommended for use with older infants when the shell is on the medium rise. There are two snaps on the large soaker. The male snap at the wide end of the soaker is for snapping it into the shell, and the female snap at the narrow end of the soaker is for snapping the small soaker onto the large soaker. Using both soakers together is recommended for use with toddlers when the shell is on the largest rise setting, and for overnight use. The microfleece top layer of both soakers sits closest to baby’s skin and helps to provide a stay dry feel so baby doesn’t feel damp. The GroVia O.N.E. diaper requires one prep wash for daytime use, and should be washed 3 to 5 times before using it overnight so that it reaches its maximum absorbency.

How it Works:

I first put the GroVia O.N.E. on Petit Prince when he was around 18lbs. I was keen to test this diaper out overnight right away, so that’s precisely how I used it the first time. I started out with it on the medium rise (give Petit Prince’s weight), and had both soakers snapped in. I’m going to be perfectly honest here. I couldn’t get it on without leg gaps at that rise setting. I adjusted the rise down the the smallest setting, folded the two soakers over at the front a bit, and tried again. Petit Prince was just not having it, so I had to set the O.N.E. aside and try again the next night. That next night, I started out with the O.N.E. already set to the smallest rise with both soakers snapped in. I pulled the soakers up over Petit Prince first, then folded the front of the soakers down a bit, then pulled the shell up and over the soakers. This time, it worked great and there were no leg gaps! The GroVia O.N.E. is a very sturdy diaper, so when you put it on baby it can withstand a good amount of tugging to get the fit just right. Despite having a steep learning curve to get the right fit, once I got the hang of it I could get it on quickly.

Once I mastered getting the GroVia O.N.E. on Petit Prince, I quite liked it! Despite him being in the recommended weight range for the medium rise, he definitely needs to be on the smallest rise setting. That’s true even now at just over 19lbs. He doesn’t need the tabs to be crossed over, so I can still see the GroVia O.N.E. fitting babies that are much smaller than him. I often find that Petit Prince needs to be one rise smaller than is typically recommended for his weight in most cloth diapers, so this wasn’t the least bit surprising to me.

In terms of fit, the GroVia O.N.E. is a pretty hefty diaper. For day time use, I use just the large soaker, and for night time use, I use both the large and the small soakers. It’s not a diaper that I would consider a “trim” fit by any means, but it does fit well. Once it was on the right rise setting for Petit Prince, I had no trouble getting the leg elastics right in on the underwear lines (where they should be), and had no gaps at the legs on the smallest rise setting.

The closure options are a nice feature of the GroVia O.N.E. diaper. I’m partial to snap closures myself, but having the option of a hook & loop closure is really appealing. I was able to get the same great fit with the hook & loop that I was getting with the snap closure, but it took a teeny bit less time than using snaps. I can definitely see the advantage of the hook & loop option for babysitters and grandparents, or anyone else that might not be familiar with modern cloth diapers. It would be nice if there were laundry tabs on the O.N.E. so the hook & loop didn’t need to be removed before washing the diapers. The snap closure is a single row of snaps. My preference is to have a double row of snaps as it allows you to customize the fit a bit more (more snug over the legs than the tummy or vice versa). I was still able to get a good fit over the legs with the GroVia O.N.E., but it did seem more snug over Petit Prince’s tummy than I typically prefer. The second snap (inner snap) on the tabs of the diaper help to prevent the dreaded wing droop which is especially important with a single row of snaps.

What about absorbency? This is where the GroVia O.N.E. shines! I wasn’t sure it was going to do it, but oh my goodness did it ever! This diaper is the bomb for overnight use. THE BOMB. It takes a lot for a diaper to surprise me, and the O.N.E. has done just that. The first night it was on Petit Prince, he wore it through his bedtime feeding, one surprise overnight feeding, and I left it on for his first feed of the day. It did not leak. Not even a little teeny bit. Of course it was possible that maybe he just didn’t pee much overnight that particular night, so I put it on overnight again. I used my GroVia O.N.E. overnight again and again. Each time it held up flawlessly. Was it heavy in the morning? Oh yeah. Did it leak even a little? Absolutely not. For day time use with just the large soaker, it held up really nicely. I easily got 3-4 hours out of the GroVia O.N.E., and again had no leaks.

Something else that I noticed about the GroVia O.N.E. that I really liked was just how dry they felt when clearly soaked and saturated. There are a lot of different stay dry materials available for use in cloth diapers, but there’s something about the microfleece that GroVia has used for the O.N.E. It truly felt dry, I mean actually dry, to the touch even after being on for 12-13 hours overnight. It’s nice to know that Petit Prince wasn’t feeling wet or damp despite being is a heavily saturated diaper in the morning.

The GroVia O.N.E. with only the large soaker for day time use.

If I could change anything about the GroVia O.N.E. it would be these two things. First, I’d much prefer a double row of snaps along the front for the closure. The other thing I’d prefer is if the snaps on the soakers were not exposed on top of the microfleece layer. It’s just a minor thing, but I really prefer it when snaps (even the back of snaps) aren’t sitting against baby’s skin. It would be nice if they could have put these snaps through the cotton layers but under the microfleece so they were covered.

Pros:

  • One diaper solution for daytime AND overnight use
  • Outlast Closure provides the option of snaps or hook & loop
  • Works really well overnight without needing to purchase additional boosters
  • Microfleece layer on soakers keeps baby feeling truly dry
  • Replacement hook & loop is available (sold separately)
  • Tabs can be crossed over with both snap and hook & loop closure options
  • “One size” fits through potty training

Cons:

  • Fit learning curve is steep
  • Bulky fit
  • Single row snap closure
  • No laundry tabs (hook & loop needs to be removed before washing)
  • Exposed snaps on the top of the soakers

Final Thoughts:

The GroVia O.N.E. diaper provides a lot of choice. Want hook & loop for the grandparents, but prefer using snaps yourself? The O.N.E. can do that! Worried that hook & loop won’t last for the life of the diaper? Replacement strips are available for a minimal cost, and replacing it is as easy as snapping it off and snapping it on. Want a diaper that works during the day, but also powers through long nights? The O.N.E. absolutely does that. I prefer a more trim fitting diaper for day time use, but I am finding myself reaching for the O.N.E. for night time use. It’s a really great overnight solution that takes all the guess work out of a successful leak free night. At $31 CAD, it is on the upper end for price, but it does perform well enough that you don’t need to invest in additional soakers and boosters to get a leak free night. For that reason, I do think the price is justified here. If you’d like to try a GroVia O.N.E. cloth diaper, Canadians can order them from Calgary Cloth Diaper Depot.
