Philips Avent Comfort Double Electric Breast Pump Review

I’m now eight months into my breastfeeding journey with Petit Prince, and it has been quite different from my breastfeeding journey with The Heir. From a tongue tie that was not diagnosed until he was four months old to donating over 40 litres (1352oz) of breastmilk so far, breastfeeding Petit Prince has been an exercise in patience, perseverance, pumping, and paying it forward. When The Heir was born, I rented a pump for the first month and that was it. I became pretty skilled at hand expressing when I wanted to leave him a bottle or put breastmilk in his infant cereal or purees. Although hand expression is an excellent skill to acquire through your breastfeeding journey, sometimes you just need a really good pump. This is where the Philips Avent Comfort Double Electric Breast Pump comes in. No matter how good of a hand expresser I am, it can’t compare to the speed and efficacy of my Avent Comfort pump. What’s more is that “comfort” isn’t just in the name of this pump, it actually is comfortable. Crazy, right? Let me tell you more about it!

The Details:

The Philips Avent Comfort Double Electric Breast Pump comes with everything you need to get started pumping right away. Included in the box are two breast pumps, one motor, two Avent Natural bottles with two newborn nipples, two sealing discs for storing breastmilk in the bottles, and a travel bag for transporting the pump. There’s also a sample of Avent’s day time and night time breast pads.

The Avent Comfort Double Electric Breast Pump can be used as a double pump or as a single pump, depending on your needs at that time. If baby just fed off of one breast, you can pump with just one breast flange on the side baby didn’t nurse from. Or, if you like to pump while baby is nursing, you can do that too! The breast pumps come apart for easy cleaning. It consists of a silicone diaphragm, the pump body, the massage cushion, and a white valve. Once assembled, the pump is a closed system. I’ve talked about closed and open breast pump systems before, but just to recap it a bit I’ll explain what a closed system is again. A closed system breast pump is one that uses a diaphragm to prevent milk and condensation from forming in the tubing that runs between the breast pumps and the motor. This makes the Avent Comfort Breast Pump a hygienic system for expressing milk. If milk or condensation forms in the tubing between the breast pump and the motor, it can make its way to the motor of the pump causing bacteria and mold to grow. In turn, that mold and bacteria could make it back through the tubing and contaminate the milk that is being pumped. In other words, you want a closed system pump.

The pump motor itself is lightweight and a compact design. This makes it fairly discrete to carry around, especially if you’re going to be pumping at work. In addition to the on/off button, there’s a button that stimulates a let down, and a button for each of the three suction options (low, medium, and deep). What about this comfort business? This is where the massage cushions come in. The massage cushions have these innovative massaging petals on them that help to mimic baby’s natural sucking to help stimulate a letdown and milk flow. These cushions are placed into the flange part of the breast pump, and create almost a vibrating feeling rather than the more traditional pulling feeling you get with other electric breast pumps.

The travel bag that the Avent Comfort Double Electric Breast Pump comes with is really handy, and it’s not humungous or cumbersome. It easily fits the pump’s motor unit with the silicone tubing and caps attached, both pump bodies fully assembled, both 4oz Natural bottles that come with the pump, the adapter to plug it in, and an extra bottle. As an added bonus, the breast pumps come with a cover, so you can put the cover on the breast pumps once assembled and attached to the 4oz bottles, and place them right into the travel bag. You can be sure that no dust will get onto the breast pumps while they’re stored in the bag, so they will be ready to use right away when it’s time to pump.

How it works:

There’s not a day that goes by where I do not pump. My main goal in pumping is for donation to the Northern Star Mothers Milk Bank here in Calgary, but I do sometimes need to leave a bottle for Petit Prince too. Most days, I pump once in the evening after Petit Prince has gone to bed. I’ve also pumped first thing in the morning when Petit Prince has unexpectedly slept in and I needed to alleviate some engorgement, and on the occasional afternoon when I’ve needed to leave a bottle of fresh milk for King Dad to give to Petit Prince. I feel like I’ve really put the Avent Comfort Double Electric Breast Pump to the test, and I like it!

Let’s start with the comfort. Is it all just a name or is it really more comfortable? It is actually more comfortable than other pumps I’ve used. The way this pump feels on the breast is different than the way other pumps feel. At first, it was a little surprising because I wasn’t expecting it to be so different. The best way to explain it is that it feels almost like a vibrating massage on your breast. Where other pumps can be more like a strong pulling or even slight pinching, the Avent Comfort pump is neither of those things. It’s the massage petals on the comfort cushions in the flange of the breast pump that contribute to that feeling of comfort.

Avent has really thought out the details with this pump, and it’s really the little things that make this pump just that much easier to use than some others. The parts are much more sturdy than I expected them to be. There’s nothing flimsy about this pump. The silicone diaphragm that creates the closed system is substantial. It doesn’t feel like it will tear or rip when I’m attaching it to the breast pump or removing it for washing. The white valves are thick and sturdy, and even have a special grip on them to make it easier to remove them for washing. No more worrying that they’ll get lost at the bottom of a sink full of soapy water and you don’t have to worry that you could easily tear them. The pump body itself has large openings making it really easy to get right in there and thoroughly clean it.

I also really like that the breast pumps are uniquely designed to allow me to sit upright and pump comfortably. There was no need to lean forward at all to ensure the milk isn’t pooling in the breast pumps. Having to sit leaning forward can put a strain on your back and isn’t ideal for helping you to relax. Being able to sit comfortably with the Avent Comfort Double Electric Breast Pump allowed me to feel more relaxed, and that has always helped me get more milk.

How about the milk output with the Avent Comfort Double Electric Breast Pump? Oh it’s good. Really good. I had no trouble getting my average output and then some. I also didn’t need to be hooked up to the pump for long periods of time to adequately drain each breast. Most of my pumping sessions lasted just 15 minutes. I found the gentle stimulation mode triggered a letdown quickly (within 2-3 minutes), and then I was able to select the level of suction that was best for me. I could do the deep suction level, but I found the medium suction level was usually adequate and very comfortable.

Milk output with the Avent Comfort Double Electric Breast Pump was excellent when used as a double pump and as a single pump.

How about the noise level? Well, no pump is perfect! I will admit that this isn’t the quietest pump I’ve used. When using the pump as a single rather than a double, I did find it got a bit louder. I found the amount of noise the pump made to be lessened by keeping the motor unit in the travel bag when pumping. This muffled the sound enough that it wasn’t quite so disruptive.

The Avent Comfort Double Electric Breast Pump attaches only to Avent bottles (or bottles with the wide opening). It’s not a huge issue as the pump comes with two 4oz bottles to pump into, but if you tend to collect more than 4oz from each breast in a pumping session it can be a bit of a challenge. Thankfully, larger Avent bottles are available at most grocery or drugstores, so if you need a larger bottle to pump into, they’re not particularly hard to come by.

Final Thoughts:

Avent has really thought about the details with their Comfort Double Electric Breast Pump. From the innovative massage petals on the soft breast cushion to the grip on the valves, no detail has been missed. Avent clearly knows what a pumping mom wants and needs in a breast pump, and this pump truly delivers. The Avent Comfort Double Electric Breast Pump provides a comfortable pumping experience in a hygienic closed system, and includes everything you need to pump, store your breastmilk, and feed your baby.
