Bummis All-In-One Cloth Diaper Review

I received this item at no cost to facilitate my review. All opinions are my own.

You know what I love? I love products that are made in North America. I really do. You know what I love even more? Products that are made in Canada! Why? Well, because I’m Canadian, but also because I like to know that the products I’m buying for my family are manufactured by individuals who are treated fairly and paid a living wage. I know that it isn’t always possible to purchase what I need (or want) from brands that are manufactured in North America, but it’s something of value to me. When Canadian retailer CozyBums asked me if I’d be interested in reviewing the new Bummis All-In-One cloth diaper, I was really excited. No, really! I was stoked. Not only do I always love trying new diapers, but the fact that Bummis products are all manufactured in Canada had me jumping for joy! I love cloth diapers, but Canadian made cloth diapers? Hold me while I swoon over here. If you haven’t heard of CozyBums before, they’re a Canadian cloth diaper retailer located in Prince George, BC (my home province). They carry an extensive selection of cloth diapers and cloth diaper related accessories, and also stock breastfeeding accessories and reusable cloth pads for mom! What’s more is that if you’re like me and you want to shop Canadian whenever possible, they have an easy to navigate section where you can find all the Canadian made products they carry in one place. I love that! Want to know what else I love? The new Bummis All-In-One! This diaper is packed full of features that make it an All-In-One diaper you want in your stash. Let me tell you why!

The Details:

Bummis was founded way back in 1988 in Montreal, Quebec (I say way back because some of you might not even have been born yet!). They strive to design and manufacture high quality cloth diapers that are easy to use, and made locally with North American sourced materials. If I do say so myself, they do so exceptionally well! The new Bummis AIO cloth diaper is the latest addition to the Bummis lineup. Just launched in February 2016, this diaper is sure to impress even the pickiest of cloth diapering mamas (read: me, ha!).

The Bummis AIO is an “all in one” cloth diaper. What that means is that all the components of the diaper are sewn on. There’s no need to stuff and no need to sort through a pile of inserts that come out of the dryer to pair them with the correct shell. An AIO diaper is ready for the bum right out of the dryer, and ready for the wash right off the bum. No muss no fuss!

The new Bummis AIO cloth diaper is a “one-size” diaper that fits from 8-35lbs, so it will grow with your baby. The rise is adjustable to accommodate babies within that weight range with a 2×4 snap adjustment at the front of the diaper. Bummis uses a larger snap than what you might be familiar with from other cloth diaper brands, but these snaps are very sturdy. The diaper closure consists of two rows of snaps with a pair snaps on each of the diaper tabs. The outside of the diaper is made of PUL (polyurethane laminate)  which is what makes the diaper waterproof. The edges of the diaper are finished with a super soft trim that leaves no elastic or PUL exposed.

Inside the diaper is where all the magic happens. The sewn in soaker is made of two layers of organic cotton and has a “waffle” like texture. The layers of organic cotton are sewn together only at the front and back of the soaker, so the sides are open when you turn the diaper inside out. This is meant to help speed up the drying process after washing. There’s a front pocket opening with a tongue-style polyester stay dry soaker attached. This  soaker can be laid on top of the organic cotton to create a stay dry feel for baby, or it can be stuffed inside the pocket opening so the organic cotton is against baby’s skin. The pocket of the Bummis AIO diaper is a generous size and would allow for the addition of a booster if your baby is a particularly heavy wetter, or if you’d like to use the diaper overnight.

How it works:

I’ve had this diaper since Petit Prince was around 17.5-18lbs. At that weight, I used the diaper on the second smallest rise setting and found that I could get a nice fit. I typically prefer to have a stay dry feel for Petit Prince as he can sometimes be sensitive to wetness, but with the Bummis AIO, I found it performed best for us with the stay dry tongue style soaker stuffed inside the pocket of the diaper. I find that he can be a heavy wetter at times (especially in the morning), so I liked to fold the stay dry soaker in half so it was doubled up front. This added an extra layer of absorbency right where he needed it, and I really liked having that option. The fit of the diaper on him was trimmest when the stay dry soaker was stuffed all the way in as a single layer, but I didn’t mind the little bit of bulk up front when it was folded in half in the pocket. With the stay dry soaker on top, Petit Prince’s pee stream was too fast or too forceful to absorb quickly enough. This was a complete non-issue when the stay dry soaker was stuffed in the pocket.

Speaking of the pocket, I love that there is a pocket opening in the Bummis AIO. It really gives you a lot of options for how you use this diaper. Need a booster for overnight use? No problem! Want to fold the stay dry soaker for a boy? You can do that! The one thing I didn’t like about the pocket opening was that it was at the front of the diaper. My preference is for a back pocket opening. Having two boys, the front of the diaper is always the first place to get soaked. I prefer a back opening so there’s a chance I’ll be unstuffing the stay dry soaker from a dry spot at the back. It’s not a deal breaker by any means, but just a small personal preference.

The super soft trim around the edges of the diaper is something that I absolutely love. Petit Prince is ALWAYS kicking his feet around, so his legs often rub against the edges of his diapers. With the Bummis AIO, that soft trim prevents him from getting any chaffing on his legs from all that kicking and wriggling around. Not only that, but the elastics on the Bummis AIO are nice and snug, so that soft trim keeps those elastics from digging in at all.

How about the absorbency? It’s intense. Once it is fully prepped, the Bummis AIO is a workhorse. Considering how trim it is when the stay dry soaker is stuffed in as a single layer or laid on top, I was surprised by how absorbent this diaper is. We could easily get three to four hours out of this diaper during the day, and I don’t doubt that it would perform really well with a booster for overnight. In terms of poop containment, this diaper is top notch. Whether we’re talking liquid-y pre-solid food poop, or peanut butter-y new to solid food poop, this diaper held it in.

How about the two across snap rise adjustment? This is one of those things that I chalk up to personal preference. Some diaper brands opt for three snaps across for the rise adjustment while others, like Bummis, go for two snaps across. The main concern with a two snap across adjustment is that the front of the diaper may puff out a bit. I did not have this issue with the Bummis AIO, so I didn’t really mind that the rise was adjusted with just two snaps instead of three. You might be concerned that with a two across snap adjustment the rise snaps are more prone to popping open when adjusting the waist closure. This is absolutely not the case with the Bummis AIO. The snaps Bummis uses are incredibly sturdy and strong. Once they’re snapped closed, they aren’t going to pop open unless you want them to.

I am partial to a double snap closure at the waist, and I’m so pleased that Bummis has opted for that type of closure with their AIO diaper. This allows you to secure the top snap farther out than the bottom snap to accommodate a larger tummy (especially handy when baby starts sitting), or you can secure the bottom snap farther out than the top snap to accommodate thicker thighs. This means you can get a truly customized fit with the Bummis AIO and never compromise between a comfortable tummy and no gaps around the legs.

The Bummis AIO diaper washes up really nicely. Although in theory, the tongue style soaker should agitate itself out in the wash, I find that it doesn’t do that in my HE washing machine. If you have an old school top loader with the tall central agitator, the tongue style soaker will agitate out in the wash for sure. After washing, I turn the whole diaper inside out before I throw it in the dryer. This allows more air to get to the two layers of organic cotton so it dries super fast. Unlike other AIO cloth diapers, the Bummis AIO dries quickly and this is a huge plus! There’s nothing worse than pulling an AIO diaper out of the dryer and having to hang it to dry overnight or for the day because it’s still damp. With the Bummis AIO it is ready to go back on the bum right out of the dryer with no extra wait time. Just flip it back right side out and it’s ready for use again!

The Bummis AIO diaper retails for $31.95 CAD. Yes, that’s a little on the higher end of diaper prices, but let me tell you why I think it’s completely justified here. For starters, the Bummis AIO is not only made in Canada, but the materials from which it is made are sourced from within North America whenever possible. In other words, these diapers aren’t just assembled here. The Bummis AIO diaper is very absorbent, and if your baby isn’t a super soaker, you might just get away with using it overnight without an additional booster. It also dries really fast. With other AIOs, you’d need a larger number of diapers in your stash to account for additional drying time. With the Bummis AIO, you can count on them being ready to go back on baby right out of the dryer. That saves time and means you don’t need to have quite so many diapers in your stash (though who am I kidding, with all the adorable colours and prints you’ll want at least one of each).

Pros:

  • Made in Canada!
  • Very absorbent
  • Choose between organic cotton or the stay dry soaker against baby’s skin
  • Generously sized pocket/opening
  • Dries quickly
  • Sturdy snaps
  • Super soft trim around the edges make it extra comfortable on baby

Cons:

  • Stay dry tongue style soaker can be slow to absorb
  • Pocket opening is at the front

  4. I really like how detailed your reviews are and how you explain different things you try in detail. My husband wants to use all AIOs, but my thought is I like the flats so far and the customization they offer. This bummies interests me though for the fact it’s like having a booster built in and will make it easier for the sitters.

Would you say the snaps might be to hard for the elderly though?

  9. I so regret not getting my family on the bandwagon on cloth before my son was born. At almost 9 months, I’m still very tempted to switch. If i could only coerce the nice family members who occasionally buy a box of disposables to buy one cloth diaper each time they offer to buy a box.
